Vehicle Description

1973 Lotus Europa Twin Cam - John Player special (5-speed) for sale! Motorcar Classics is proud to offer this striking, thoroughly restored 1973 Lotus Europa Twin Cam Type 74. This highly collectible piece of British motoring history is one of the limited-production examples originally built to commemorate Team Lotus's historic 1972 Formula 1 World Championship victory. It proudly wears the iconic John Player Special livery, pairing a deep black finish with distinctive gold pin-striping over its lightweight fiberglass body. Following its acquisition by a passionate long-term owner in 2018, this Europa underwent an extensive, multi-year restoration process that was completed in 2025. The body was completely stripped down, primed, and expertly repainted by the specialists at *The Paint Spot* in Addison, Illinois, ensuring the classic lines of this mid-engine sports car are beautifully preserved.Under the rear cowl, the mid-mounted \"Big Valve\" 1,558cc Lotus twin-cam inline-four and its rare five-speed manual transaxle were fully rebuilt in 2023. Equipped with dual Zenith-Stromberg carburetors, the engine was factory-rated at a sprightly 113 horsepower and 104 lb-ft of torque, which offers thrilling performance when paired with the car's featherweight steel backbone chassis. To ensure modern reliability, the car features a completely replaced wiring harness and an upgraded aftermarket front radiator, with a cooling system flush completed in May 2026. True to its vintage carburetor setup, the vehicle runs a bit rough upon initial startup but clears up and runs beautifully once warmed up to operating temperature. The legendary handling has also been completely revitalized, as the independent front and rear suspension received brand-new shocks, springs, and bushings during the build. Stopping power is confidently provided by power-assisted front disc brakes with red-finished calipers and rear drums.Inside the cabin, you are greeted by a beautifully refreshed, period-correct cockpit. The fixed-back bucket seats with integrated headrests were completely rebuilt and handsomely re-trimmed in premium black vinyl by *Ogden Top & Trim Shop*. The driver is treated to a freshly re-veneered wood dashboard housing a suite of classic Smiths gauges that received a partial restoration by *Mo-Ma Manufacturing*, including a 140-mph speedometer and an upgraded 8k-rpm tachometer. A color-coordinated center console proudly bears the authentic Special 143 badge and holds a classic wood shift knob, while additional interior comforts include power-operated side windows, a functional heater, and an aftermarket Pioneer CD stereo. This exceptional Type 74 Europa beautifully balances the raw mechanical purity Colin Chapman intended with the peace of mind that comes from a fresh, professional restoration. Accompanied by an owner's manual, a carburetor tuning guide, and extensive service records, this turn-key classic is ready for its next caretaker.
